Privacy Policy

Last updated: 5 September 2026

Pre-launch draft. Tryve is not yet open to the public. This policy describes how the product handles data today and is pending legal review before launch.

Who we are

Tryve helps students aged 15–18 explore colleges and understand what they would actually cost. Tryve is the data controller for the information described here. For any privacy question, or to withdraw consent, email privacy@tryve.me.

Students under 18, and parental consent

We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 13. If a date of birth shows an account holder is under 13, we refuse to set up their profile and they cannot use Tryve. Their sign-up details are not automatically erased at that point — if this has happened, email us and we will delete the account.

If a student is 13–17, we require consent from a parent or legal guardian before their profile is built. The student supplies a guardian's email address, and we send a link to a page explaining what is collected and what the guardian will and will not be able to see. Consent is recorded only when the guardian takes an explicit action on that page — following the link does not by itself give consent.

Consent links expire after 24 hours and can be used once. We store only a cryptographic hash of the link's token, never the token itself.

What we collect

  • Account: name, email address, date of birth, password (stored only as a bcrypt hash).
  • Guardian: a parent or guardian's name and email address, supplied by the student, used to request and record consent.
  • College interests: the colleges a student saves, compares and ranks, and their intended field of study.
  • Financial context: household income band, savings and expected aid, if provided. Used only to estimate what a college would cost that family. We do not ask for account numbers or payment details.
  • Assessments: answers to interest and personality questionnaires, and any reports a student uploads.
  • Conversations with Ora: messages exchanged with our AI guide.
  • Usage: pages visited and features used, to understand what helps.

What a parent or guardian can see

A guardian who has given consent can ask us what categories of information we hold about the student — what has been collected, how much, and when they last used Tryve. A guardian sign-in showing the student's college list and the cost picture for those colleges is something we intend to build; it does not exist yet.

A guardian cannot read the student's conversations with Ora, their questionnaire answers, or anything they write in a reflection — not on request, and not in summary. This is a deliberate design decision: a student who believes everything is reported home stops answering honestly, and honest answers are what make the product work.

Why we can process this

For students under 18, our basis is the consent of a parent or guardian. For students 18 and over, it is their own consent. Consent can be withdrawn at any time, and withdrawing is as easy as giving — one email to privacy@tryve.me. Withdrawal does not affect processing that already took place.

Who we share it with

We do not sell personal data and we do not use it for advertising. We share it only with service providers that run the product on our behalf:

  • Google Cloud Platform — hosting and databases.
  • Anthropic and OpenAI — the AI models behind Ora and our analysis features. Conversation content is sent to them to generate a reply.
  • Resend — transactional email.

How long we keep it

Until the account is deleted. Withdrawing consent is not the same as deleting: it stops us processing the data and locks the account, but keeps it, so consent can be given again without the student losing their work. Ask us to delete and we will. On deletion we remove the personal data we hold about the student across our systems and anonymise what must be retained for security or accounting.

Your rights

Students and their guardians can ask for a copy of the data we hold, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or object to how we use it. A student can export their own data from their settings page at any time.

Email privacy@tryve.me and we will respond within one month. If you are in the UK or EU and are not satisfied, you can complain to your data protection authority.

Changes

If we change this policy in a way that materially affects how we use a student's data, we will tell the student and, for students under 18, their consenting guardian.
